 Abstract

In the leather industry, Cr (III) is used as a basic tanning agent. The wastewater discharged from the tannery industry contains a high concentration of chromium. In South Asian developing countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh where the economy is strongly dependent on leather manufacturing industries, there is a need to spread proper information regarding the harmful effects of chromium toxicity to the workforce employed in the tannery and also to the people living in the surrounding area. Employees of leather manufacturing companies had numerous health problems. This study looks into the health problems that employees of a leather manufacturing company face. According to this study, employees of leather manufacturing companies face a variety of health problems; the most prevalent ones in the tanning industry are cancer, musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory disorders, and skin disorders. In order to determine possible occupational health hazards that could be a contributing factor to the observed health problems, this review paper evaluates the work environment and job duties. Providing personal protective equipment, improving health and safety training programs, implementing ergonomic improvements, and cultivating a culture of health and well-being within the company are all aided by this study.

 Abstract

Textile industry in India contributes a lot to the growth of Indian economy and plays an important role in providing the employment. Handloom is one of the oldest industries in India, where a considerable number of rural people are engaged in weaving. Worker's well-being is highly associated with the productivity and cost benefits of any industries. Handloom weavers work for long hours in very small spaces with poor ventilation and low lighting levels with uncomfortable postures. Long hours work with traditionally designed tools and un-ergonomic work places can cause musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and other health problems. This review study seeks to identify various MSDs and occupational health problems among workers in the handloom sectors. The study also reviews the effects of improvements in ergonomics on occupational health, productivity, and cost benefits. The study emphasizes the need for more investigation into weavers' postural strain and recommends that ergonomic workstations be incorporated to reduce the negative effects of the workers' existing positions. Improving the weaver's work position could enhance their quality of life.

 Abstract

Food processing is the conversion of raw ingredients into food or other forms of food. The spice sector plays a significant part in agricultural industry. Spice plays a major in the kitchens of India. The workers of spice mills survive in the area filled with fine dust of spices including chilies, coriander, and mixed masalas. Workers in spice mills are exposed to a variety of respiratory illnesses. The workers of frozen units face hazards including thermally induced problems like chills. Many of them suffer due to the low temperature constantly prevailing in the cold storage units. A standard questionnaire was prepared and the survey was conducted through personal interviews, and google forms in both spice processing mills and frozen food units. The questionnaire includes socio-demographic profile and questions related to the occupational hazards faced by the workers of spice mills and frozen food units. Chills, frostbite, hypothermia, trench foot are the most common hazards faced by the workers of frozen units.

 Abstract

Leather manufacturing company workers faced so many health issues. This study explores to investigate the health issues faced by workers in a leather manufacturing company, that workers in the leather manufacturing company experience a range of health issues, with body ache, joint pain, and headache being the most common problems reported. Other health issues identified include teeth problems, irritation in feet, urinary tract discomfort, giddiness, eye irritation, chest irritation, stomach discomfort, and other symptoms and they should have stronger regulations with regular enforcement, regular health surveillance, and worker and employer education are necessary for reducing these exposures and improving the health outcomes of the tannery workers.

 Abstract

The basic principle of every organization is to provide a safe environment at all stages of the production cycle. Health and safety of the employee are equally important for the job to be done. Usually the term 'flour dust' could be referred to particles coming from finely milled cereal or non-cereal grains, the 'grain dust' consists of particles produced during grain harvesting and handling, excluding milling. Flour mills consist of heavy machinery that creates a heavy noise, finest flour particles throughout the industrial area. A lot of respiratory hazards and hearing issues due to the heavy noise created by the machinery. In these units, heavy noise created by the machinery causes hearing impairment among the workers and slips and falls in the working area. A random sampling method was followed to check the hazards encountered by the workers of flour mills in selected flour mills of Pudukkottai district. Clinical symptoms, respiratory illnesses, musculoskeletal problem were analysed. Many of them are uneducated and they are unaware of the importance of safety measures to be followed inside the industry premises. This study revealed the importance of educating and implementing safety measures like masks and ear muffs usage among the workers.

 Abstract

The world has been facing a growing crisis in textile waste due to global population growth and improved living conditions, combined with a decrease in the life cycles of textile products. Textile waste recycling is one of the key aspects to consider in moving towards circular economy in textiles. Worldwide, 75% of textile waste is landfilled, while 25% is recycled or reused. Landfilling of textile waste is a prevalent option that is deemed unsustainable. Promoting an enhanced diversion of textile waste from landfills demands optimized reuse and recycling technologies. Reuse is the more preferred option compared with recycling. Textile waste can affect people's lives economically and environmentally. Producing apparel from natural or synthetic origin can produce pollutants and waste at each stage. Various textile reuse and recycling technologies are available and progressively innovated to favor blended fabrics. This paper aims to establish reuse and recycling of textile materials to manage textile waste.

 Abstract

The leather and footwear industry is a significant sector in many countries, providing employment opportunities and contributing to economic growth. In Tamil Nadu, major clusters are located in Ambur, Ranipet, Vellore, Vaniyambadi, Pernambut, Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Erode, and Dindigul. Workers in this industry face numerous occupational health and safety (OHS) risks, including hazardous chemical exposure, heavy machinery, and occupational injuries and illnesses. This study investigates OHS practices in the leather and footwear industry, focusing on hazard identification, challenges, safety protocol implementation, and recommendations for improvement. A comprehensive analysis reveals that workers are primarily exposed to chemical hazards (35%), machine guarding risks (25%), Musculoskeletal Risk (17%), biological hazards (23%), psychosocial hazards (13%), and other hazards (20%). Promoting a good workplace with skilled, safe, and healthy workers is crucial. This study aims to highlight the importance of OHS, understand the challenges and opportunities, and propose recommendations for creating a healthier, safer, and more productive work environment.

 Abstract

Textile industry in India contributes a lot to the growth of Indian economy and plays an important role in providing the employment to the rural and urban population in India but it fails to foster education and health as key component of human development. There are different hazards faced by the workers in textile industry such as exposure to cotton dust, exposure to chemicals, noise and ergonomics issues etc. To prevent the health issues of workers in industries it is essential that the workers be aware of the various occupational hazards in the industry. By health and safety issues means the occupational health hazards that include physical hazards, chemical related hazards, biological issues, ergonomical hazards and by environmental aspects means the effect of chemical gases and liquids released by textile plants on environment. This indicates that occupational health and safety practices were not satisfied at the workplace. Therefore, the organization should take the serious implementation of (OHAS) at the workplace.

The data was collected by face-to-face survey with a standard questionnaire, selected samples were collected from dairy industry and water quality testing laboratories. The findings of the study showed that male workers are in high numbers than female and most of them in normal BMI range. Among the selected employees, 22% are having food allergen, 8% employees are using tobacco and 48% of people are engaged in physical activity. While assessing their mental health condition showed that 68% are having depression and 32% are facing anxiety disorders.
