Soon after independence, the Government in the centre and the states took upon themselves the responsibility of designing and passing several legislations to curb evil practices and protect women and other weaker sections from their cruel capture and impact. Anti-dowry legislation is one such. Although unsuccessful in completely halting the heinous practice, the Dowry Prohibition Act has undoubtedly created some public implications. One such important one is the psychological solace it has brought to thousands of affected wives harassed and tortured for dowry even after several years of marriage. This paper investigates a rather unwanted impact of the situation: an empirical study in a district in southern Karnataka has shown traces of misuse of the law to bring to book the parents-in-law despite their claims of innocence. The paper attempts to highlight how more excellent research is needed on domestic violence caused by dowry practice and the process of legal reform.

Urban expansion has gained much more momentum in the 21st century as a global phenomenon. Estimates indicate that by 2025, just two years away, the percentage of the world's population living in cities and towns will rise from 9.2 percent in 1900 to 65 percent. Even the developing nations, with India being a premier country among them, hold globalisation and sister processes (liberalisation and privatisation) responsible and support them with considerable achievements in science, technology, commerce, communication, transportation, and educational advancements. People refer to the Urban Fringe as the "institutional desert" because of the unchecked growth in urban expansion; although the urban area is usually relatively developed, the Fringe is characterized by intensive and changing land use patterns, a high land price, and a dense, mobile population. Fringe studies from a sociological and qualitative perspective are lacking in India. Based on ongoing research (for a PhD), this paper attempts to delineate the urban influence on the village communities in the fringe area of Mysuru City. The findings indicate that the City Expansion Project of the government has both positive and negative impacts on the PAPs (Project Affected Persons). These impacts include loss of livelihood, social disorganization, and financial instability, as well as new occupations and ways of living that benefit the younger generation and those at the bottom of the hierarchy, providing an escape from the hegemonic rural caste/class structure.

With the advent of modernization, traditional occupations worldwide have undergone radical transformation--structurally and functionally. In the socially hierarchized society in India, transformation has ruined the livelihoods of communities professing occupations whose products lost their market value after industrialization and urbanization. Globalization in the 1990s has caused further harm to many such economic activities and the communities professing them, which are already vulnerable and marginalized at the lower rungs of the stratified rural social structure. Based on current sociological research work (for a PhD degree), this paper has attempted to shed light upon the problems encountered by the Potter (Kumbara) community in Karnataka. Changes brought in by industrial products (Plastic, Aluminum and Steel) leading to changes in consumer choices on the one hand and depletion of natural resources causing a shortage of needed raw materials in the villages, on the other, have together resulted in devastating effects leading to either discontinuation (or very low-key production) of the only skilled profession that the Kumbaras knew of, as their traditional/caste ascribed occupation - Pottery. The study has shown that poverty and vulnerability have doubled as a result of a fall in demand for their products, and alternative employment opportunities are bleak, considering their low literacy and skill levels. The paper has tried to capture their perceptions and suggestions for improvement, such as a higher quota of reservations for accessing government jobs and other benefits.

Attempts to abolish the practice of dowry by policymakers using legal measures have not found much success and have proved ineffective. The much prevalent dowry menace has led to several inevitable negative consequences. Significant among such consequences is the impact of domestic violence attributed to the practice of dowry on the children within the family. Research studies have established that juvenile exposure to domestic violence is consequential and is associated with increased display of aggressive behaviour, increased emotional complications such as depression and anxiety, lower levels of social competence, and poorer academic performance. Severe parental conflicts interrupt many critical processes of a child's psychological development. As a result, the very nature of the parent-child relationship is disturbed. The turmoil within the family leads to anxiety and emotional distress among children, and in many cases weakening their emotional bonding with the abusive father or the persons responsible for dowry related violence within the family. This paper attempts to highlight the sociological importance of studying the impact of continued domestic violence on the emotional, physical, and cognitive development of children within the families prone to such a phenomenon. The data is from an on-going study of doctoral research work obtained from Mandya district of the state of Karnataka. The paper attempts to call for more rigorous implementation of the anti-dowry and anti-domestic violence legislation. Besides, the paper endeavours to call for specialised services to the affected children and provide them a safe family atmosphere.

Abstract: This research attempts to examine how the Tirumantiram has explained the basics of spiritual life as Iyama and Niyama. The Tirumantiram is a spiritual book that contains scientific concepts. This book, which consists of nine tantras, contains various concepts for social life. The Attanga Yoga path serves not only the foundation of spirituality but also promotes physical and mental development. Thirumoolar emphasizes human behavioral characteristics especially through Iyama and Niyama. The author, who refers to both of these as the fundamental of spiritual development, also discusses their importance in achieving spiritual maturity. While Yoga has explained the basics of human development through ethics, it also establishes as foundation for human perfection. This study is structured using descriptive research methodology and a behavioral approach to analyze the Tirumantiram.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) either from inadequate insulin synthesis or impaired insulin sensitivity. Diabetes mellitus ranks among the top ten major causes of mortality in the 21st century. By 2045, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that almost 783 million persons, or 1 in 8, would have diabetes, representing a 46% rise. Hematological markers, including total white blood cell (WBC) counts, lymphocytes, and neutrophils, have been associated with the onset of type-2 diabetes. Increased white blood cell counts correlate with insulin resistance and pancreatic beta-cell impairment. Lagerstroemia speciosa, a tropical and subtropical species indigenous to Asia, is a viable contender for the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot in India, especially around Coimbatore. The experimental animals were divided into six groups with n=6 animals. The groups III, IV, V, and VI are the experimental groups, orally fed with LELE Low Dose and High Dose (250 and 500 mg/kg body weight), and the II the standard groups treated with glibenclamide. The after 21st day evaluated for the estimation of biochemical parameters and haematological parameters. A histopathological evaluation was also performed. The results show that the treated groups showed a significant (***P<0.001, **P<0.01, *P<0.05) elevation compared to the control group. Effective diabetes management frequently necessitates regular complete blood counts, illustrating the need of early identification and management of anemia and obesity in diabetic patients in primary care environments. Plants provide an appropriate substitute to manufactured pharmaceuticals, acting as possible sources of hypoglycemic drugs. Conventional medicinal systems extensively utilize these botanicals for diabetes prevention. Herbs, such as the decorative and medicinal herb L. speciosa, have demonstrated potential antidiabetic properties. Furthermore, anthocyanins, which are polyphenolic substances present in food, may significantly contribute to the prevention of type-2 diabetes.

Antipsychotic medications are first-line medication treatment for schizophrenia and while theycan be effective in managing symptoms, they can also have significant adverse effects. However, caregivers may not always have adequate knowledge about the adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs, which can lead to poor treatment outcomes. The side effects of antipsychotics not only damage the health of patients, but also increase the burden and stress of caregivers. However, caregivers have different attitudes and coping styles about the side effects of antipsychotics. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of Self Instructional Module on knowledge regarding adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs among care givers of Schizophrenic patients in selected tertiary care hospital of the city. Methods : One group pre test post test method was undertaken where 100 caregivers of Schizophrenic patients were recruited as sample by non-probability convenient sampling method. Using structured questionnaire for knowledge (25 questions) data were collected. Data analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics to describe and show the association between knowledge and the variables Result : The study result depicted that Among all caregivers 24% of the caregivers had poor knowledge (score0-8), 58% of them had average knowledge (score 9-16) and only 18%of caregivers had good knowledge (score 17-25) in pre-test whereas in post-test 1% of the caregivers had poor knowledge, 30% of them had average knowledge and 69% of them had good knowledge. The comparisons of the pre- test and post- test mean score of the knowledge were done by the paired t test. Average knowledge score in pre-test was 12.52 which increased to 18.91 in post-test. 't' value for this test was 11.9 with 99 degrees of freedom. Corresponding p-value was small (less than 0.05), the null hypothesis is rejected. Knowledge score in post-test was significantly high as compared to that in pre-test Conclusion : Present study concluded that the Self Instructional Module have significant improvement in knowledge about adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs among caregivers of Schizophrenic patients, it has enriched features such as self explanatory, self understanding, self directed, self motivated and self evaluating ,a finding reveals that Self Instructional Module was effective in improving knowledge and awareness regarding adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs and its management

Alcohol dependence is a most alarming issue in the world nowadays. It is a psychiatric diagnosis in which a person continues to use alcohol despite negative consequences to relationship, work, or quality of health and life. Madya has nectar like properties when used judicially following all norms, otherwise it acts as poison. Madya possess all the qualities of Visa and indiscriminate use of Madya causes Madatyaya. As per ayurvedic concept Madatyaya is Tridoshaja vyadhi mainly Kapha sthana is vitiated along with Agni. Nidana is the primary cause of manifestation for every Vyadhi and Nidana Parivarjana is thought to be a sort of cure. Nidana Parivarjana and there by practising Pathya, one might reduce the likelihood of experiencing Vyadhi by being aware of the Nidana. Though, finally it will give a proper knowledge regarding the etiological factors of Madatyaya in the present era.
